Who is at the highest risk of having low vitamin D levels?
- Children and adolescents who spend little time outdoors.
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women.
- People aged 65 and over.
- People with darker skin (people of Asian, African, Afro-Caribbean, and Middle Eastern descent).
- People who cover most of their skin when outdoors.
- People living in the United Kingdom and northern climates.
- Anyone who works from home, office workers, and night shift workers.
- Obese people or those who are significantly overweight.
Vitamin D is produced in human skin through exposure to sunlight. This is the main source of vitamin D for most people.
What do vitamin D levels mean?
Some people with low vitamin D levels do not experience symptoms. To check vitamin D levels, a simple blood test can be performed. Many factors influence vitamin D levels, including lifestyle and medical history. Vitamin D levels are usually measured in nmol/l, and results for adults are described as follows:
80 nmol/l and above: adequate
50-79 nmol/l: insufficiency
Less than 50 nmol/l: low vitamin D levels
Total vitamin D levels exceeding 220 nmol/l are considered "high" and increase the risk of vitamin D toxicity. However, people who work outdoors and are exposed to high solar radiation, such as lifeguards, can easily have vitamin D levels of up to 160 nmol/l.
How much vitamin D is safe to take?
Up to 1000 IU (25 μg) per day is often recommended, especially to maintain normal bone health. It is recommended that all pregnant and breastfeeding women take a daily food supplement containing 10 μg (400 IU) of vitamin D.
Children aged 3 and over can take up to 10 μg (400 IU) daily.
Multivitamin food supplements and cod liver oil will contain some vitamin D. Beware of vitamin D sold online where the amount per dose is (50,000 IU) and in bottles that contain a year's supply of vitamin D!
Nutrition
We get about 10% of our vitamin D from food. The best sources are oily fish (salmon, sardines, herring, mackerel), red meat, liver, and egg yolks. Margarine and some breakfast cereals may be "fortified" with vitamin D, but only in small amounts.
